Achieving Best Evidence (ABE) Refresher Training

A targeted one-day refresher course designed for experienced practitioners to reinforce and update their existing Achieving Best Evidence skills. This dynamic programme combines scenario-based learning with critical reflection to address current safeguarding issues, legislation, and best practice questioning models. Upon completion, delegates will possess renewed confidence and competence to plan and conduct child-centred interviews that meet the highest professional standards.

    • Duration: 1 Day

    • Delegates: Up to 15 (Face-to-Face) or 20 (Teams Webinar)

    • Cost: £550 (Face-to-Face) or £450 (Teams Webinar)

This one-day ABE Refresher Course is designed for practitioners who already possess a working knowledge of Achieving Best Evidence (ABE) and are currently involved in child protection or investigative interviewing. The programme reinforces core ABE principles while developing confidence, competence, and professional judgement in planning and conducting child‑centred interviews.

Participants will revisit key topics, including planning initial visits, establishing ground rules, obtaining consent, note‑taking methods, the use of intermediaries, sexualised language, responding to disclosures, special measures, and effective joint working with the police. Current safeguarding issues, such as child sexual exploitation and the work of specialist teams, are also explored in depth.

Training is delivered through a blend of lectures, group discussions, practical exercises, role play, and scenario‑based learning. Delegates engage in hands‑on practice using recognised tools such as the spider‑graph note‑taking method and the TED questioning model. Video and audio materials are utilised to support learning regarding questioning styles and information‑gathering.

Throughout the course, participants receive regular feedback, opportunities for reflection, and peer review in a safe and supportive environment. Assessment is ongoing and includes formative, summative, diagnostic, and evaluative methods to ensure learning is embedded and professional standards are met.

All delegates receive up‑to‑date resources aligned with current legislation and guidance, including materials on special measures and the PEACE model. Post‑course support is available for those who wish to seek further guidance or continue developing their ABE practice.
